What Is Health Coaching?

Lorna studied and trained at Emory University which focuses on empowering the client to gain control of daily stressors to leave space for tackling the big issues in life.  Making the decision to seek support in accomplishing daily tasks is the first step in taking control and choosing your outcome.  This can be done in individual or group settings.


  • Active listening and open communication
  • Proven goal-setting techniques which are manageable and time-based
  • Talking through past successes and applying them to new challenges
  • A holistic approach to reducing stress


  • A nutrition or diet plan
  • Advice on how to do something better
  • Guidelines on how other people have been successful
  • Spreadsheets, bullet points and power points (such as this bullet point!)

Lorna is also trained in Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) and utilizes these techniques to help her clients be more present and subsequently in control of what can be dealt with today. MBSR can be used to help with chronic pain and disease management (see my Healthspirations/Mindfulness tab for more info) and tons of research is underway to continue showing other benefits!

Individual Sessions

Individual health coaching sessions are one-on-one, directed and personal.  You can work out a personal plan tailored to meet your goals and needs.  Typically, weekly conversations work best for most clients until you enter into the maintenance phase.  After all, the goal is to coach you out of needing a coach!

An ideal individual client may want to:

  • Incorporate healthier eating habits into daily life
  • Transition to a vegetarian or whole foods plant-based diet
  • Quit smoking
  • Adhere to physician recommendations on lifestyle modification and medication schedules
  • Start a business/change careers
  • Reduce stress while traveling on the road
  • Cook more meals at home

Your first on-boarding session will walk you through a health compass designed to highlight each aspect of your life that brings meaning and fulfillment.  In this session Lorna will ask you to rate each aspect of your life in each area of the health compass so we can review your progress at appropriate intervals. You will also go through the terms of engagement and ask as many questions as you would like about the process.  You will be able to set up your on-going plan, and set dates and times for future meetings. Successive sessions are usually 20-minute weekly check-ins and goal setting sessions.

Each session is conducted in-person, virtual or over-the-phone to leave room for the flexibility you need in your life. Flexibility is key to this coaching relationship so your needs are constantly met and your goals can be quickly realized.

In each session you can expect to be greeted kindly by Lorna and have a fully-present, active listener and a coach who is committed to meet you where you are. What that means is Lorna will help you discover today what challenges in your life are preventing you from achieving that goal you have.  Before you can lose weight, quit smoking or have more restful sleep, you have to uncover the other (little) things that are blockading your ability to do so. In the coaching process, you will come to see that confronting these daily challenges will make space for achieving the larger goals.
